Ultramarines
Ultramarines are a well known 40k army. With hundreds of wins across the Imperium.
Explain.

Re: Ultramarines
My god, do you instinctively ask stupid questions? Or do you actually think about it before you type?

Re: Ultramarines
The guys at GW just wanted to make 'the perfect chapter' so they came up with the ultramarines as a role model and came up with loads of fluff for them. What they fail to realise is that 'the perfect chapter' is extremely unimaginative and boring. However, GW fluff isn't exactly 'official' per se, so we can just like to think that they're failures anyway. Just because GW likes them too much doesn't mean we can make up our own defeatist fluff about them

Re: Ultramarines
Wow, Michael you really don't know... Everything that GW publishes is to be considered 'canon' regarding any 40k reference. And they didn't create the perfect chapter, they created the epitome of the COdex Astartes. Even Ultramarines have had some traitors taint their ranks before, so they are far from perfect. Imagine you are building a machine, but first you need a prototyppe before going into mass production. The Ultramarines were GW's prototype.
Ultramarines have so many victories bcause, during the Scouring, they had the most marines left over and so contributed to the reconstruction of the Imperium more than any other Chapter. Where a chapter was too weak to bring enough force to bear when facing an opponent, the Ultramarines would assist, by creating a diversion or assisting in the actual assault. Thus, the two Chapters' victories became widely known for the Ultramarines assistance.

Re: Ultramarines
so why can we not come up with our own fluff about them being crap? no reason. the sky's the limit
Re: Ultramarines
You can make your own fluff about them being crap; just don't expect anyone to take you seriously for a second.
Re: Ultramarines
The Ultramarines have become such a successful chapter due to higly advanced tactical thinking, good battle plans, flexible forces and a tenaiousness to take on all. The fact of the matter is, They are a good chapter, with good alliances and a strong force. And just think about it, How many people do you know to collect Ultramarines? I don't know many at all. Just because they are the poster boys and GW gives them all the attention, doesn't mean they are crap.

Re: Ultramarines
However Ben, they are unimaginative in the extreme. Just about every time GW does anything about the marines, the Ultras always HAVE to be there. They are on every standard marine box set GW sells. A lot of players go "I'm collecting ultramarines" "why?" "because they're the ones painted on the box" - no sense of imagination. every damn direction - ultramarines, ultramarines, ultramarines. They've even begun development for a sodding UM movie for god's sake. We've already had discussion about this movie. They may be successful, but they're covered too much so they're incredibly boring
Re: Ultramarines
Actually, they are far from unimaginative. A LOT of veterans play Ultrmarines because the colour scheme is that simple, you can paint it at any painting level. And you're thinking for Space Marine boxes - well, yeah, because they are the epitome of a Codex Astartes chapter, and therefore are the absolute paradigm of said faction. A UM movie makes so much sense because they are the most widely known chapter, not a single Marine player doesn't know about them.
Re: Ultramarines
Ben, I do NOT believe that they are tactically flexible. The idea of the codex Astartes was to make sure no-one held the power of a primarch again. This meant the splitting into several chapters, which caused every chapter to adapt to a particualer (fail spelling) tactic, some are more flexible than others, but not Ultramarines.

Re: Ultramarines
Jericho, I have only known 6 players who have played the Astartes as Ultramarines (well, met in person). They are all veterans of the game. And beat me thoroughly each time. They aren't common at all in games, as I have seen more Imperial Fist and Salamanders players than Ultramarines.
I like em, I might make a squad of veterans 'tutoring' some of the Knights Griffons I collect.
