He didn't; it was Magnus. Magnus "foresaw" the treachery of Horus and attempted to warn the Emperor psyichically. Doing this, he broke down the mental barriers between the Warp and the Emperor's palace, leaving the Palace open to Daemonic invasion.

This in a Horus Heresy book, cause I stopped at around Legion/Mechanicum.
