Magni had never liked guard duty in the tunnels. In the low light there was in the deeper parts of the stronghold, most of Magni's time was spent not watching for attackers, as should be the case, but rather half-snoozing off, waiting for his shift to end. Peering out into the gloom, all he could see was rock face after rock face, no living souls in any direction save the other Ironbreakers on duty in the nearby tunnels. No sound, either. That was what Magni didn't like. He wouldn't mind it so if there was at least something interesting for him to listen to, a waterfall, for example. But, nothing. Still, he had to get used to the incredible dullness of being on duty down here, such was the life of an Ironbreaker. Another four hours, thought Magni, and he could get a change of scenery. Spinning his axe in the air out of boredom, Magni almost hoped that the tunnels would get attacked more often, just for a bit of excitement in his duty. That was the reason he was down here, anyway. To protect the tunnels against incursion. Pah. That only happened very rarely. Even then, it was usually only a small group of goblins or wolves or something. Nothing that ever presented a proper challenge.
Magni's ears suddenly pricked up. It wasn't much, but it was there. A small shuffling. He took his helmet off to get a better listen. He pressed his ear against the rock wall to pick up any vibrations. Yes, there was something, or rather - things heading his way. At last, something to occupy him, at least for a while. Placing his helmet back on his head, Magni moved up to the nearest tunnel corner, waiting patiently to ambush his prey while the sound got closer.
Magni listened intently as the shuffling was added to by the sound of metal scraping against the rock floor. As the group of (presumably) goblins got closer, Magni hefted his axe, ready to swing at the first creature to round the corner. The tension mounted up as his eyes picked up the first light he had seen in hours - only a few metres away now...
As the first of the group came around the corner, Magni swung his axe on the creature, the steel blade hacking into the goblin's flesh and hewing a deep gash into it, instantly felling the greenskin. Pulling it back for a second strike, Magni watched the next round the corner, as he brought his weapon onto its skull, splitting the goblin's skull in twain. As the goblin's blood sprayed forth from it, Magni revelled in the fact he was the only one taking the pleasure of killing the vile greenskins this night. The third and fourth were slightly more cunning - rounding the corner and thrusting their short spears at Magni before he struck - all to no avail, the hits bouncing harmlessly off his steel plates. He reacted to this by taking a horizontal sweep on the pair, lacerating their throats, blood pouring from the gobbos' necks. Magni himself now went round the corner, hacking through what was now revealed to be a decent-sized group of about 20 or so more goblins. Carving his way through the group, Magni was slightly disappointed in the fact that these goblins presented little to no challenge to an Ironbreaker such as himself, as they were each rent up quickly and effortlessly. Nevertheless, he happily tore the gobbos limb from limb, each swing from his axe tasting black goblin blood from his prey. If only they would do this a bit more often... thought Magni, as he noticed he was having a lot of fun bringing them low.
Down to the last few, Magni hefted up his axe to fell another, when at last the remainder fled in fear of getting chopped up like their brethren. Even for the runners, Magni had something, as he took from the back of his shield a small axe, aiming it at the gobbo at the rear, and propelling it at him. The axe hit its mark, cleaving a good inch or two into the goblin, sending the creature tumbling to the ground. Marching up to the injured beast, Magni held no second thought as he brought the axe down upon its neck, decapitating it with one swift chop. He watched the last couple of goblins flee back into the caves as he took his axe back onto his shield.
Taking the next 10 minutes or so, Magni dragged the bodies and dismembered limbs into the open part of the mines, preparing to burn their hideous bodies.
Setting fire to the corpses, Magni popped the cork on his flask of ale hanging at his waist while gazing into the flames, watching the flames incinerate the bodies of the hated creatures. Swigging from the ale, Magni waited for the flames to die down before heading back into the gloomy darkness of his post, slumping back against the rock face. He just had to wait out the rest of his otherwise uneventful shift. Snoozing off, Magni reflected upon the events of the past 20 minutes, wishing all Ironbreaker guard duties were as much fun.
